I have a whole salmon...what shall I do with it?

supper tomorrow night for a few friends and not sure what to do - it's a big salmon 3.65kg. Having a bit of a tomatoey goats cheese thingy to start and then 2 puds - apple and something red crumble and a rhubarb streusel flan. So it's just the bit in between. Don't want to fuss over it too much (would rather socialise once they arrive) any suggestions?

We often have whole salmon and the easiest way to prepare it is to soak it in soy sauce and then to barbecue it straight on the grill (no faffing with foil).

I would have to fillet it and complicated stuff like that though to do the first suggestion - it still has its head! that seems as if it would be hard to do the boning etc....

It is pretty easy to fillet a cooked fish. You just gently pull on the spine and the whole skeleton comes out.

Have you done this, zap?

I've been tempted but a £10 - £15 fish is a bit of a risk.

Have settled on the pesto, am now turning my thoughts to a potatoey type thing to have with it, maybe a big shallow dish with slices of spuds cooked slowly in something which isn't creamy - any suggestions?

or any potato ideas really

zapostrophe - Oh. My Goodness. Just googled it and watched someone cooking it in the dishwasher on youtube.

Amazing. Makes sense really.

OP - You could do your thinly sliced potatoes with stock ( veg or fish )

Or roasted cubed with olive oil and garlic tossed in?

yogabird · 05/04/2010 19:23

taffetacat did the spuds your way - fab. Bottled out of the dishwasher thing though and baked it with a jar of pesto and a jar of black olives in its middle - it was delicious. Have just made the remainder into a fish pie and frozen it
