chocolate crispie cakes with no chocolate!!

I know this sounds like a contradiction in terms but my mum always made a recipe with cocoa, sugar, syrup and butter. Can't find it and the one a friend gave me turned out very strangely. If anyone has similar I'd be really grateful to see whether was me or the recipe! Would happily do chocolate recipe but can't keep chocolate in the house - well not for long anyway . I remember them being even better than chocolate ones - really chewy and lovely strong cocoa flavour.

I always make my chocolate crispie cakes like your mum.

I don't have a recipe as such.

In a large saucepan I melt a generous chunk of butter. I then add lots of golden syrup and mix well over the heat until it all goes soupy. Then I add some good quality cocoa powder. I put a spoon at a time and keep adding until my mix is chocolatey enough.

Then I stir in as many crispies/cornflakes as I can reasonably add and still get them a good coating of the chocolate mix.

They are so much nicer than ones made with proper chocolate. Sticky rather than melty and slightly bitterer. Plus, I always have the ingredients in my cupboard so I can make some anytime I fancy.

SOrry if this isn't much help.

piprabbit, that's really helpful. In fact as helpful as a recipe! I don't use exact quantities for lots of stuff I cook and it just shows that this is another thing where exact isn't necessary. Thanks! We'll be having them today!

I hope they go OK and are as good as you remember.

The Dinner Lady cookbook has a recipe for rice crispie cakes like that, using cocoa powder instead of chocolate.

Oh I thought you meant non-chocolatey ones. Those you do with marshmallows and toffees and butter and they are yummy.

I always do chocolate ones with mars bars.
