Stupid qtn: If a recipe asks for cream cheese....

...where on earth do i buy it from? I have never seen "cream cheese" in Tesco's or Sainsbury's. The only place I have ever seen cream cheese in in specialist delis. Does it mean I can use something like Philadelphia? If not, where do you buy yours from? Any ideas/tips? Thanks.

Philadelphia is cream cheese, Tesco's definitely sell their own brand of cream cheese as I'm sure all supermarkets would

thighsmadeofcheddar · 20/03/2010 19:13

I just use Philadelphia.

philadeliphia is fine but needs to be full lard version

Intergalactic · 20/03/2010 19:16

Yes, cream cheese is Philidelphia and similar. I've had Sainsburys and Tesco own brand in the last few weeks.

Great. Thanks. I knew I was being particularly stupid, but I've always been put off making any cheese cakes because of this.
The reason I finally got round to asking is that wanted to ask is because i've been lent the Hummingbird cookbook (I want to make every single recipe) and it has a recipe for a cream cheese frosting, which looked too good not to try.

Full lard? Okay. Got it.

philly/own brand will definitely do, but proper cream cheese from a deli is better for icing though. philly doesn't set as well.

TragicallyHip · 20/03/2010 19:19

Ooh I have that cook book, the black bottom cup cakes are amazing! And cream cheese frosting is better than normal icing imo

JonahB · 20/03/2010 21:35

Thanks TragicallyHip, I can see myself buying my own copy v v soon. I've just made the spinach and cheese savoury muffins this evening. I've eaten 3 and my DS(2) wolfed his 2 down...... I'm planning the more sugary offerings next.....

oooh I made the black bottom cup cakes today, and my cheesecake mix in it went a bit wrong - now think it was because I could just not bear to put any more saturated fat in there and used half fat?
