rice recipe that kids will actually eat?

am fed up giving them the usual pasta, potatoes stuff

they rarely get rice and i have heaps to use

am thinking of some kind of tomato-ey, sausage, peas brocolli thing

would i just stir some puree and seasoning in to cooked rice? how do i make it super tasty?

You can cook it like a risotto - cook the rice in the pasta and stock. I wouldn't use brocolli personally - too soggy - peas and green beans are good. Soy sauce added to it can make it more interesting and a little chilli if they will eat it. CHorizo is a good meat to add.

thanks orm - you mean cook rice in the pasta sauce, right?

i have chorizo, peas, sweetcorn, carrots...

so will cook the rice in stock and other ingredients separately, and mix together with sauce. yes?

I do it with sausage, bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes.

That's what we are having for dinner tonight actually.
Then I just add any veg that needs using up.

I usually cook the rice and sausages seperately, then bung it all together with a squidge of tomato puree.

kitkat9 · 18/03/2010 16:02

god i sound like i've never cooked before!

i'm actually quite nifty in the kitchen

rice is not my forte though!

Gawd! I meant puree and stock not pasta! In fact I use passata not puree... sorry

OrmRenewed · 18/03/2010 16:05

But yes, cook the rice in the mixture of passata and stock and add the veg and meat towards the end so they don't go too soft.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 18/03/2010 16:05

Sorry, I should have said tinned tomatoes! We are not doing very well are we.

Othersideofthechannel · 18/03/2010 16:08

Our DCs enjoy rice salad with mashed tuna and sweetcorn.
Risotto
They also like it plain. I serve it with stew but they much prefer the rice.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 18/03/2010 16:08

Sod it, give them fish fingers and chips!

Othersideofthechannel · 18/03/2010 16:09

Do they like soy sauce. You could do egg fried rice?

OrmRenewed · 18/03/2010 16:10

And I read otherside's post as saying 'rice salad with mashed potato' ....

BTW you will have to keep adding water to stop it drying out as the rice cooks.

Othersideofthechannel · 18/03/2010 16:13

Mine would probably enjoy that Orm!

They usually wait until their food is stone cold before they start eating.

FluffyDonkey · 18/03/2010 16:13

Spicy sausages :

Cook sausages
Sauté onions (and celery if they like it), add tin of tomatoes, add some worcesterhire sauce, bung in the sausages.
Separate pan - cook rice

When rice is done, serve up in a bowl with spoons (it worked for my mum )

mazzystartled · 18/03/2010 16:13

mine love egg fried rice, sometimes with tofu or chicken

with peas and sweetcorn in it + soy

choosyfloosy · 18/03/2010 16:16

Children's kedgeree? ds has been KNOWN to eat this although he is not a rice fancier

make rice
hard boil 1 egg per person, and slice
unwrap packet of smoked mackerel and using a fork, push the mackerel off the skin and mash it up
cut up half a tomato per person (or cut in half 2 cherry tomatoes per person
handful of frozen peas

mix all ingredients in a serving dish, ensuring that frozen peas are covered in rice so that they melt as they get to the table. Add a small handful of chopped parsley.

Alternatively, if you have a child like my ds, put small blobs of each ingredient on the plate as he will only eat separate stuff , and leave out the eggs

simpson · 18/03/2010 16:18

another one for egg fried rice with peas, sweetcorn, raw pepper, cherry toms & ham.

They are eating it right now...its my lazy tea!!

kitkat9 · 18/03/2010 16:28

lol at resorting to fish fingers (again) - it did cross my mind

it's cooking as we speak, sausage, green pepper (which will be declared 'yuck'), celery (likewise) and onion (likewise again, sigh)

rice is cooking in veg stock, will add tomato pasta sauce and serve with a flourish.

I bet they hate it.

OrmRenewed · 18/03/2010 19:56

Yay kitkat!

Egg fried rice with grated carrot

ILoveGregoryHouse · 18/03/2010 20:05

Chop up and fry one small onion for 5 mins. Add 200g rice and 1tsp smoked paprika, stir. Add 500ml stock and a 400g tin of tomatoes or you could use passata. Some tom puree. Cook for 20 minutes. Add sausage/chorizo/chicken/prawns/whatever, some peas/sweetcorn/mushrooms/whatever.

Serves 4. This is a slight adaptation of Annabel Karmel's paella recipe. My boys love it.

Glad they loved your version. Might give it a whirl!
