How long to I boil my tin of milk for?

I'm making banoffee pie for a family meal on Sunday.

Have put the tin on to boil but can't remember if it's 2 or 3 hours.

Just realised that it's mum and me doing the cooking, not the blokes, that's the wrong way round isn't it

boiling milk?

sunchild77 · 11/03/2010 14:54

Think she means condensed milk cyb..

Bloody hell, it might explode!

Better off simmering it for 20 mins or so in a non-stick pan till it goes caramel-colour.

I use 1 tin plus about 2 oz butter and 3 oz sugar.

I know condensed but you dont boil it ,do you ,for banoffee?? just add it straight from tin I thought

Boredofboden · 11/03/2010 15:04

I've made banoffee quite a few times and always boiled it in the tin for about 2.5 hours.Make sure it's fully in the water though or the tin will explode. The best banoffees imho are made by boiling the tin.

meltedmarsbars · 11/03/2010 15:06

I've never dared! I'm too afraid of the explosion!

I thought I was going mad for a minute! Thank you boredofboden (btw so same, I wish it had it's own topic so I could hide it!)

Have found a deep saucepan so it's completely covered with water, can I put the lid on to save evaporation?

I've got a spare tin in case it doesn't work.

Ive made it same as Bored, gotta keep topping up the water level so it doesnt boil dry. After its boiled leave it to cool for ages or you'll get a nasty burn..

mmmm banoffee... shame dh hates bananas... weirdo that he is..

sunchild77 · 11/03/2010 15:09

cross post... yeah Id put a lid on...but keep checking!!

Cheappinkfizz · 11/03/2010 15:15

thanks. I've found a recipe that uses ginger biscuits, chocolate digestives, chocolate and butter to make the base. I'm really looking forward to eating it!

I've kept the lid off but kept on adding water throughout and checked it so it doesn't boil dry, but it probably doesn't make much difference if the lid is on or not. Sounds great, lucky you, I'd love some banoffee right now but know if I made it I'd eat it all by myself.
