Am SO BLOODY SICK and TIRED of spending hard earned money on avocados only to find when I get home and cut them open that they are black inside, or rock hard, or tasteless etcetc!

Tis the wrong season, sadly.

I cannot get them to ripen for love nor money, then before my eyes, they turn black. Very annoying.

I bloody love them. No way should something that delicious and cramy be good for you!

Unfortunately, avos are picked green so they can travel by air .... but they are yum with a bit of salt and lemon juice ....

You need to go to M&S.

Or possibly a small, hideously expensive orgnanic food supplier without "food miles" scruples.

Holymoly321 · 20/02/2010 19:09

it takes the bloody piss! sorry to curse but it drives me nuts!

Have you tried keeping them beside a bunch of bananas? Supposedly that helps fruit to ripen because bananas give off ripening fumes ...

Holymoly321 · 20/02/2010 19:11

Did exactly that dorothea - in fact i keep a supply of paper bags just for that

Ripen them wrapped in newspaper or as DP says with a banana nearby ...

SA 'Halls' avos are good - but I am just biased .....

compo · 20/02/2010 19:15

If it is driving you bananas why not buy something else until they are in season?

foxytocin · 20/02/2010 19:24

I only buy them when I choose them myself but I grew up in the tropics and have an eye for which ones are not going to be rank.

My top tip is to wait till the premium avocados that have been reduced. the skin still looks healthy ie, not starting to shrivel. It doesn't matter if the skin darkens a bit just not shrivelled. The Haas avocado darkens.

To touch the avocado flesh should have some 'give'. If the skin has darkened but no 'give' it was too young when it was picked so it will go from green to rotten without ever ripening.

I almost never buy tropical fruit or veg full price here because how they ripen depends on when they were picked. If they were immature when picked they will be crap.

god i love avocados. joined a facebook page praising them and a girl has posted a photo of her leg - on which she has a tattoo of an avocado!

i usually find the m&s 'perfectly ripe' (?) ones are good. come in a double pack. bit pricey, but worth it imo, have also had many disappointing experiences.
