Please help me plan romantic birthday dinner for dh

thanks

I would like to make a really nice dinner for dh for friday. I've put friday afternoon aside to do the shopping and cooking but I can also pick up bits tomorrow morning for anything I need to do in advance. I'm a reasonable cook but more kind of homecooking rather than posh stuff. Happy to try making posh stuff though.

Looking for Starter, main and pud. not got an icecream maker.

nothing too spicy cos although dh loves it, it gives him hiccups. I can't eat coconut and dh isn't great with lobster or crab (violent upset tummy with it) no oysters either as we don't have anywhere decent locally to buy good seafood.

Over to you... (hopefully!)

that sounds doable and I just happen to have a large amount of marmalade I made recently. Thanks!!!

so sorry to deviate kitten but snickers could you tell me which book the jamie salmon is in please. Or if its online. Sorry kitten, do let us know how it goes p.s thank you for enlightening me that riverford do double cream- i never knew!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/02/2010 11:19

not at all!

Right, I have all the ingredients in and a plan. I hope dh doesn't look in my pj drawer cos now there are small bottles of gin and vermouth in there too. He could get very worried!!

decided after looking at the ingredients on the very expensive onion marmalade that I could make my own, esp as I have some nice homemade raspberry vinegar that I could use.

I'm going to make a nice menu on word and email it to dh at lunch time tomorrow.

Oh that sounds so nice! I bet he is really surprised.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/02/2010 19:57

I hope so, he did ask tonight what was for dinner tomorrow and I told him vaguely that I'd sort something out.

He also told me that he thought he was getting a cold. I have told him he is Not Allowed To.

right.
quick coffee and then getting started I'm going to tackle the pate first I think cos that is like the cooking that I'm used to.

ok pate is in the fridge looking all pretty with a bay leaf on top. I think I put too much brandy in it though

crostini are just like giant croutons arent they? they are done now as is onion marmalade.

Posset is in the fridge - it will set as it chills won't it?

quick cup of tea and onto those biscuit things and some toasted almonds.

start on potatoes after that.

I'm knackered - would never make a proper chef!!!

biscuits were easy. Hooray! posset setting.
all set to go now, every thing ready for oven.
2 min sit down and then to hoover.

Fab updates! Have just seen your posts. You sound totally under control.

The first thing I thought of when I woke up this morning was your dinner! Have a great time tonight!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/02/2010 17:04

lol!!!! that is pretty sad
made an extra pud for dd, she is scoffing it before dh comes home. she is very taken with the biscuits

don't think I need to do anything now until it is time to put the oven on. Have time to have a nice bath.

So I owe you all a huge Thank You cos this is probably the first proper nice dinner that hasn't ended up with me running ragged getting all hot and cross.

Good morning.
Thank you so much for your advice! It was an absolutely splendiferous meal.

dh did tease me a bit about my schedule when I asked him before we ate if he would like some music on. He asked me if it was on the schedule. oops, perhaps need to be a little less military next time.

The food went really really well. I managed to get the presentation right.
Have to say the most amazing bit was the lemon posset. For something so simple it is truely stunning.

Bit bleary eyed this morning

quick question. I seem to have rather a lot of pate left over. will it freeze or how long will it last in the fridge?
thanks

Hi, so glad it went well. I don't think you can freeze pate. It should last a few days in the fridge - maybe even up to a week? (Not fair to go on about it though as I am pregnant and very much missing it.)

I know what you mean about the lemon posset. The first time I made it I thought, why have I not made this before? Sure beats all the time and complication of making pannacotta.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/02/2010 18:07

sorry I shall call it P from now on

The duck and dauphinoise worked out really really well too. I've never made dauphinoise successfully before - it had always ended up dried out, but this was perfect duck too!
