Dairy free cake topping for children?

DD2 [with quite a nasty milk intolerance] is one. Awww.

So am making the number 1 shaped as you do, and although it won't matter so much to her I plan on making her birthday tea, which is now firmly hijacked by dds dairy free too. It's a nod to how crappy it is for dd2, and also sets the tone whould she not grow out of it, y'know?

So I am ok on the non-dairy choc cake s there are a few recipes knocking about, but sm struggling for topppings. I usually just whisk cream and smear than on.

Any ideas? Hoping for a pale base colour so I can colour it myself, rather than chocolate. I am happy to use egs.

Thanks in advance.

If you have a stellar choc cake dairy free recipe to feel free to share

marshmallow fonddant here I've never made it myself but have heard Good Things

MrsBadger · 08/01/2010 10:55

plain glace icing would be fine

or make buttercream using Flora or Pure or similar

Pineapplechunks · 08/01/2010 10:57

Icing sugar and water as per the side of the icing sugar packet? Not very exciting but sweet and ...erm..icingish.

misdee · 08/01/2010 10:58

i made butter icing with pure spread and coco powder/ was yummy

treedelivery · 08/01/2010 10:58

OOOOOh. That looks great, but...er...scary. I have never really iced a cake properly, I just slap goo on. Am worried it would look a blob

Sounds bril though. Powered sugar? Don't think I've seen that at Sainsury

this is the cake recipie we use

BoysAreLikeDogs · 08/01/2010 10:59

I would think that they mean icing sugar, I use that when rolling out shop bought fondant icing

HTH

MrsBadger · 08/01/2010 11:00

buttercream is no globbier than whipped cream

the sugar is labelled 'icing sugar' and will look lik ethis

treedelivery · 08/01/2010 11:02

Was it misdee? I was wondering if it would taste of marg. That is encouraging. Was really hoping to have a light colour though.

I'm looking for something more like a whipped cream or buttercream, rather than icing because I would make a hash of that because I'm thinking of a snowy theme.

I am afraid of proper icing after a traumatic experience with a doll shaped cake and about £30 of ready made beautful icing in various lovely colours.

Ok icing sugar. That's fine, got that. Was wondering if there was some other type I had missed.

Still frightened of proper icing though.

buttercream has so much sugar in you don;t taste the marg

if egg is ok then the best way to get a snowy look is royal icing - you can buy this ready mixed thus which is seriously easy, or in a packet you add water to thus which is only slightly harder.

treedelivery · 08/01/2010 11:13

MrsBadger - Gawd I just assumed they would be dairy you know. How dim.

I will but that stuff, and trial the buttercream with pure. See how we go. True about the sugar really isn't it.

I sound a numpty don't I? I make quite nice cakes really, but usually chocolate and usually with lashings of cream. Still, at least they haven't invented powdered sugar to plauge me

Hi Tree!!!

I used Marshmallow fondant on F's Bump cake,
used oily hands and surface to roll out on though rather than sugared as is really sticky. Was easy to use as so stretchy and yummy. Not snow like though!
Have fun!

You could get some toffuti soft 'cheese' (Holland and Barrett sell) and mix with icing sugar (and a bit of cinnamon if you fancy it). Goes well on carrot cake and would imagine it would be quite nice on choc cake too.

Hello maygirl!

I knew I had come across it somewhere. I might have a go but am worried that a 1 has lots of corners and it will get horribly lost in translation.

Will try get that this week CantSleep and see how she likes it.

Thanks people.
