If a recipe says white wine can I use red?

Cant be fagged to go out in the snow to buy white.

Or would apple cider vinegar be better?

If you've got any "white" vermouth (Cinzano/Martini) kicking around you could use that (but obviously don't admit you have any!).

You're better off using apple juice or just missing out the wine altogether and substituting with other liquid like stock or water.

I made salmon with red wine once. Tasted ok. Looked like blackcurrant yoghurt.

Make it without wine.

Drink the wine.

I don't like red wine in food. Always makes it grey. Looks most unappetising

If the recipe uses tomatoes it will be reddish anyway, so the red wine won't matter IMHO
