Have you seen the advert on TV for Anchor Butter, with the lovely Jersey Cow? with the lovely long tail??. Well it has been revealed to me that in NZ (on the Anchor Dairies) they cut the tails off the cows because of the flies, if this is true, it is a dammned disgrace.

I have been a non meat eater for two years because of some similar stories to the ones I have read on here. I amazed a veggie friend yesterday by telling her that I would have no problem eating a nice leg of lamb if I knew that it had a happy bouncy life in a lovely green field and then died a humane death, but I think that this happens so rarely and the meat that has this sort of guarantee is ridiculously expensive that I would rather stick to my aubergines! BTW I am always really impressed with the way that Tigger2 talks about her farm and deals with her animals, why can't more farmers be like her adn her dh?

Lillibet, it shouldn't be so expensive, to become "Quality Assured" as we are only costs us £100 plus VAT per year, this does not justify the price that the retailers charge consumers for the meat that they eat. The only difference in the mince that you buy in the supermarket is that the Steak Mince is from better cuts of meat that have not had enough of a covering of fat (not graded well enough) to become a Roasting Joint, and the honest to goodness mince is really mince made from Brisket, nowt wrong with that.

Also now to comply with Quality Assurance we are only allowed to buy Farm Assured Animals from Scotland, i.e. birth to death, until recently we were allowed to bring in beef from other parts of Britain and make it Scottish Farm Assured.
We also have to keep stringent records of ALL medicines bought, used, dosage and who administered the medicine (DH does the jagging - normally!!) that is where the computer and the Livestock Programme comes in very handy.

I'm sure lots of you watched that Panorama the other week when they showzd all that disgusting imported chicken from the Netherlands full of up to 50% water not to mention pig and beef extracts to keep the water in. Gee some people will do ANYTHING for profit. I despair too of the human race. I wonder who thinks these weird things up? ' I know we'll just take a goose and force corn down it's throat till it has a huge liver '.
