I am for ever on a mission to provide healthy food for my children and after Christmas I always feel like going on a crusade ;)
My dd, 5 y, has been to birthday parties every weekend since she started Reception in September and all the party food is starting to show, she is carrying a little more weight then she should, and although her little cherub cheeks are charming, I do want to monitor her intake of less healthy food. My ds is 2.5 and he is only just beginning to eat other veg than cucumber
Mainly I am looking to cut down on bread and pasta - they both love it but there is just not enough nutrition in it, although we mainly have whole meal spaghetti and seedy brown bread.
Ideas that have worked for me:
Open sandwhiches - means less bread, more fillings
Hummus - they just love it and I make it myself (use plenty of olive oil). Serve with pita bread and little bowls of cut up veg + peas and sweet corn - they love filling them
Cereals - mainly wheetabix, corn flakes and rice krispies, the less sugary choices
Big plate of cut up fruit after dinner - just mind the sweeter fruit, sugar is sugar, we mainly have apples, pears and bananas
What works for you?
