hiya - cooking for dh's family for our pre-xmas get together. have cooked for them lots (including three xmases) but am now truly stumped.

needs to be festive special dinner. i think a roast dinner, but need ideas for the meat.

turkey out as its a week before xmas and i dont want this to feel like a trying-to-be-xmas when its not.

i love stuffing a loin of pork but have done that for them too many times need something different

lamb/goose/fish not an option. could very possibly go for other game?? i dont partic want to stress out SIL with something her dcs havent had before, but she would say to me not to worry.

i am thinking beef. but what worries me is that i prob have dif ideas of roast beef to them. i am more of a flash cook fillet or rib and they talk about lovely slow cooked beef that crumbles. i would love to do something fancy like a beef wellington. never done it before but it kind of hits the note i want - however MIL is coealiac (sic) and i prefer to be completely wheat free rather than make two dif options. also has severe dairy allergy so again i aim for no dairy at all.

i was thinking a ham. there was a nice earl grey recipe in observer food. but mil cooks ham quite a bit and i would need my extras around the ham to be special to make it work. just a couple of different things to make it seem more than their sunday roast, but still bearing in mind a bit conservative

please clever mumsnetters 'elp!
