Slow cookers aren't noted for soup, but are good for chicken. Sorry, knacked - have to turn in - am sure someone will step up?

I made a lovely mint lamb joint in our one last week. Also cooked a whole chicken in it and the meat was perfect!

Try this website for some info on slow cooking www.slowcookerrecipes.org.uk

There are loads of recipes if you search the web but many tend to be American ones. Moneysavingexpert has quite a few recipes too.

I have a few slow cooking recipe books. I'd definiely recommend following actual recipes if you're new to slow cooking as the food can turn out bland and watery.

Beef (can substitute for any meat) and ale stew

? 3 fresh or dried bay leaves
? 500g diced stewing beef
? 500ml lager, bitter or stout (murphy's is good. guiness gives it a funny after taste)
? 2 sticks of celery
? 2 medium onions
? 3 carrots
? 2 parsnips
? 1 leek
? 2 heaped tablespoons plain flour
? 1/2 pint of stock (i use knorr stock pots)
? 1 x 400g tin of chopped tomatoes
? freshly ground black pepper

Chuck in the meat and veg, then the tomatoes, booze and stock followed by the herbs. Add the flour, give it a good stir and put the slow cooker on for 3-4 hours. Not sure what setting I just use auto.

nappyaddict · 18/12/2009 20:59

LOW setting is about 200°F/93°C

HIGH setting is about 300°F/150°C.

AUTO starts off as HIGH to reach above 280°F/140°C then it reduces to the LOW setting.

2 hours on LOW is equal to 1 hour on HIGH.

i make veg soup in my slow cooker

typically i chuck in
an onion
carrot
swede
stock
seasoning
a bit of worcestor sauce
and then maybe
sweet potatoe
potatoe
parsnip

its easy for it to not be done enough and i have found it needs a good 6 - 8 hours on HIGH to whizz properly
