Which would you prefer to see/eat, something presented like this or this (which is the simplest and quickest option) or like this which will take longer?

How are you cooking it, are you serving it hot or cold? Or even raw?

Couldn't you go with the whole fish presentation but just take the head off? It wouldn't bother me personally but a lot of people are squeamish.

craftynclothy · 27/11/2009 17:09

I'm not fussy so any would be fine for me.

heartofgold · 27/11/2009 17:09

i'd really rather no head/tail

MadreInglese · 27/11/2009 17:17

Just going to oven cook it in foil then serve it hot

I hadn't thought about the head but DP mentioned some people are a bit ewwwww about that kind of thing

I'm ridiculous about fish eyes. I always get them decapitated by the fishmonger before I buy. So I'd prefer the long-winded, difficult option - sorry!

ImSoNotTelling · 27/11/2009 17:19

Yum.

Will whole salmon fit in your oven? They can be huge buggers.

You could prob ask fishmonger to take head and tail off for you. Not sure why tail would be icky but heartofgold has spoken!

PoppyIsApain · 27/11/2009 17:21

Third option for definate

MadreInglese · 27/11/2009 17:22

Yes it will fit, have done one before (kind of sat upright and curved round in a baking dish IYSWIM)

What about headless

or is that even yukkier?

ImSoNotTelling · 27/11/2009 17:36

DO NOT SERVE THE SALMON SITTING UPRIGHT.

heartofgold · 27/11/2009 17:38

dunno why it's icky either - am perfectly happy to pull apart my own prawns and eat bouillabaisse (sp?!) which i know as fish head soup, but given the option i'd just rather it wasn't looking at me when i actually come to eat it.

ImSoNotTelling · 27/11/2009 17:40

Blinkers?

Or swimming goggles?

heartofgold · 27/11/2009 17:41

for me or the fish?

muggglewump · 27/11/2009 17:41

I like my fish served whole, not that I'd eat a whole salmon myself but you get what I mean.

wukter · 27/11/2009 17:46

No, I hate his eyes looking at me as I hover over him with a fork.

ImSoNotTelling · 27/11/2009 19:50

blinkers on all guests would solve prob for sure

slng · 27/11/2009 20:18

I love fish heads. I would get the fishmonger to take it off and then reserve it for a nice fish head curry. Yum! That reminds me, Christmas means fish heads at the fish counter. Must look out for them.

SoupDragon · 27/11/2009 20:20

Without the head.

allaboutme · 27/11/2009 20:24

3rd option, failing that the 1st option is ok.
The headless option looks even worse than the one with head on!!!

I'm freaky about fish, dont like heads, tails OR the slimy skin!!

PrettyCandles · 27/11/2009 20:32

I'm not even clicking on those links!

My mum used to serve whole poached salmon at parties several times a year. I made slightly hollowed-out heads and tails (out of salt dough, IIRC) for the fish and mum would serve the salmon trimmed, but with 'heads' and 'tails'.

MadreInglese · 03/12/2009 12:02

Thanks for all your comments, we are going to play it safe and serve without head or tail or skin

We were served a fish once at a restaurant in Hong Kong where they'd popped out the eyes and replaced them with a red fairy light in each eye socket.

It was gruesome and hilarious in equal parts. I wish I'd taken a photo.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 03/12/2009 12:08

Mil serves whole salmon with slices of cucumber over the eyes.

Presumably so it can't see the forks coming.....

MadreInglese · 03/12/2009 14:09

lol, was toying with the idea of serving it whole with shades stuck over the eyes, but that will probably still scare the fish-freakers
