What happens if I leave out the bicarbonate of soda?

I want to make some muffins. Will they go terribly wrong if I leave it out?

they won't be light and fluffy. The texture will be wrong.

Damn pretty important then. I was hoping cos the recipe is using SR flour it wouldn't be that important.

What about in biscuits?

Baking powder and bicarb are different things ...

This is the biscuit recipe:

8oz sr flour
8oz sugar
8oz porridge oats
8oz margarine
1tbsp golden syrup
1tbsp hot water
1/2 tsp bic soda
