Can't find any mirin anywhere - what can I substitute?

Am cooking Annabel Karmel's Salmon Teriyaki tonight only cannot find mirin sold anywhere near here. Finally exhausted my last chance at the local oriental food shop and run out of ideas. Does anyone know what you can use instead to get similar flavours in the recipe? There's already sake in there and I was under the impression that mirin is much stickier and sweeter? Help!

half the quantity of balsamic vinegar, not authentic but same consistency and similar sweetness and piquancy

It says here you can use sherry, or white wine with a little sugar added.
