carrot cake topping says use fromage frais, but I can't find any - what would you use instead?

It is delia's recipe for carrot cake - a friend made it for me recently and it was amazing! It is DH's birthday this week and dd and I are going to make this cake today.

So i have all of the ingredients - the topping is made of part marscapone and part fromage frais (8% fat no less ). No shop remotely near me sells fromage frais - so what would you use instead? I have the following ingredients, in the hope one of them will be a good substitute:

natural yoghurt
curd cheese (soft cheese not cottage cheese)
creme fraiche
flavoured fromage frais
sour cream (i didn't buy this specially! we already had it)

so what would you use?

Curd cheese would be the least sloppy option.

My carrot cake topping is curd cheese, marscapone, icing sugar and orange zest.

It's really delicious.

I never bother with topping on carrot cake - don't think it needs it (although appreciate that makes it less birthday cake like). I just put a dusting of icing sugar on top.

Bramshott · 16/11/2009 14:03

I would mix curd cheese with icing sugar - yum.

thank you- I thought the curd cheese would be the best, but bought the rest in case you all said otherwise - can't do anything without running it past mumsnet

Cream cheese and sugar, then seive cinamon over the whole thing.
Delicious

I made the same cake a little while ago and thought nowhere sold fromage frais until I realised I was looking in completely the wrong place. I presumed it would be with the yoghurts but it was with buttermilk and cream, above the milk in Tesco. The Tesco I was in had it and it was a small 'Metro' one.

Is Delia's recipe any good? I've just looked it up.

The last carrot cake I made from a friend's recipe was horrid, although when she makes it, it's scrummy.
I must have copied it down incorrectly.

Everyone who had it (I didn't - don't like carrot cake generally!) said it was yummy, but it improved having been overnight in the fridge and was easier to cut and less crumbly.

glad it worked out. I like carrot cake. I do Mary Berry's (or one of hers) with butter icing. Delicious. Made it on Saturday in fact.

I don't have a car today (DH needed it for work) and all of our shops are "local" shops in our town, best I could achieve was co-op! hence shortage of fromage frais.

cake looks yummy, friends was delicious, but not tried mine - and won't do until dh birthday later in week!

Thanks again.

My favourite carrot cake recipe is Nigel Slater's It never fails and is always a hit in our house.
