"Allow 1 pint of port for a party of 9 or 10 [Victorian] children"

Just came across this Victorian recipe for mulled wine for kids.

Apparently it was common for children to have wine punch at parties too.

Jesus! Children's parties must have been hard work if all the kids were (ahem) tired and emotional! Can you imagine it?!

Although I guess Victorian parents were stricter than most of us so maybe they could handle a room full of drunk 5 year-olds?!

Well, seeing that Mrs Beeton recommends nursing mothers and wet nurses to drink at least a pint of stout and two pints of porter a day, I'd guess that Victorian children must have been pretty used to alcohol...

I suppose they'd all fall asleep after half an hour. Just what you want once you've organised a couple of party games.

Hmm ... you've both got good points. Perhaps I should rethink DS's birthday plans
