Bought some mussels, loads of them were open in the bag.... what would you do?

I've tapped them and some of them slowly close, but some are staying open.

I only bought them yesterday from Tesco, it says use by today.

I SOOOOOOOOO don't want to get food poisoning!

i probably wouldn't risk it, but then i was up with vomiting and diarrhea last night.

HeinzSight · 24/10/2009 19:50

Hmm, not sure what to do.

From what I've found on the net it suggests the ones that close when you tap them are fine.

IME you should be fine with the ones that close themselves up.

whinegums · 24/10/2009 20:18

If it's not too late (i.e you haven't binned them and ordered a takeaway!) - dump them in the sink and run cold water over them for five mins. Then put the plug in and fill the sink with cold water. Give any open ones a hard tap, bin if they don't close. Cook them and don't eat any that don't open.

jennifersofia · 24/10/2009 20:20

Bin them, definitely. Food poisoning by shellfish is really awful, and can put you off shellfish for life.

ImSoNotTelling · 24/10/2009 20:35

What whinegums said. What you are looking to do it chuck any that are dead. If they can't close their shells when they are uncooked then they are dead. Ditto if they don't open when cooked.

Mmmmm I love mussels

HeinzSight · 24/10/2009 22:18

I'm still alive. Did what whinegums said and they were yummy!

ImSoNotTelling · 25/10/2009 09:17

How did you cook them?

HeinzSight · 25/10/2009 10:21

Simple but delicious mmmmmm.

I have got in the habit of doing mine with cream etc

meltedmarsbars · 25/10/2009 14:29

Must have been a mussely day - we had them too. Sauteed leek, slosh of wine and black pepper and parsley, and home-made bread.

Mmmmm.....and no-on was ill (have never been ill from shellfish)

whinegums · 25/10/2009 19:49

All sound good. I also like a tomato, chilli, garlic and white wine sauce with mine, or Thai green curry paste and coconut milk. Mussels are great aren't they - so tasty, and cheap!
