Are they worth making and what colour does the icing turn out?
I'm making them instead of a birthday cake for my Step-father tomorrow but thinking maybe I should stick to a safer recipe.

Yes, deffo! They taste better and I seem to remember that they rose more than regular ones. (Although that could be due to oven temperature or other variants). I didn't use her icing recipe so couldn't advise you on that but I would imagine slightly off white if its golden icing sugar.
