Can I pipe water icing straight onto sponge, no fondant? DS's birthday cake for Saturday - nightmare!!

so, I've got a superman cake tin. I've realised though, that when it is turned out, the detail/indents will not be seen if it's then covered in fondant icing (or any icing come to that..). So, can I pipe writing icing straight onto the sponge/fill it in maybe, or will it sink straight into the sponge?

This seemed like a good idea at the time, but now the clock is ticking and I'm not at all ready...

never tried this - but looking at the lakeland website, they do this with their speciality cakes!

I am trying to work out what to do for my DS birthday on saturday too (he's 5)!

use buttercream (twice the amount of icing sugar as butter, beaten together, add colouring as neccessary) and pipe onto cake in stars (use star nozzle on piping bag)

or, you can use fondant icing coloured, just cut the pieces to the right size and put together like a jigsaw, and ice fine detail on the top.

I think that as long as you let it cool completely it will be ok. The writing icing nozzle is quite thin though so you might need to go over bits twice.

What I have done quite succesfully is to melt choc and spoon over top of sponge cake, this will go hard and acts as a nice base for writing icing. DS can then pull off choc and ignore sponge cake
