My buttercream is so sweet that my teeth hurt

What can I do to reduce the sweetness?

I used the magnolia bakery recipe for the buttercream as had heard it was lovely, which it is but it is too sweet for me on a cupcake.

Would be tempted to add more butter but not sure how the texture would turn out - is it just creamed butter & sugar? Just use less on the top of the cupcake too.

I don't like buttercream because of precisely that reason.

try a bit of lemon juice to cut through the sweetness

It is butter, sugar, milk and vanilla extract. Lemon juice is a fab idea!

As is cream cheese, would take the edge off of it but would you use it in place of butter or milk? Or in addition to?
