Can you shallow fry (or even bake) falafel?

I love falafel, but it's too expensive to buy and I don't have any kind of fryer to deep fry it. Is there any other way of making it? Any wisdom, recipes or anecdotes gratefully received!

Certainly you can shallow fry, I never do anything else. I can't see why you couldn't bake them either.

I've made falafel once before using a packet mix and I'm fairly sure that I baked them. I seem to remember them tasting ok as well.

I shallow fry them. They tend to go a bit flat rather than round, but they are fine. I've tried baking but they were a bit dry.

I make my own, very cheap to make and shallow fry

Great, thank you all! Now I know it can be done, I must try it!
