I am trying to make plum babas from a recipe at delicious.com. You use yeast instead of baking powder. I use yeast a lot in breadmaking but I have a breadmaker so use the stuff for that. I didn't check the instructions on the yeast packet (Allinsons Dried Yeast) and only soaked it in tepid water, didn't add sugar. Now of course it isn't rising. Have I made pastry? The recipe called for a dough on top of which you dotted 100g of butter. So I am thinking it might be a bit flaky (just like my cooking ha! )
