frozen food safety..........

hi, i've just bought some 'fresh' fish but it appears to have been frozen, can i put it in the freezer?

Also, if I make a fresh chicken casserole and freeze it, do I have to defrost it thoroughly then cook it?

Sorry if these questions sound a bit dim, but I'm a veggie and I don't want to kill the carnivores!

I have the same question as I've just gone to take out lovely wild alaskan salmon fillets that I bought reduced last week and bunged in the freezer.

Now I notice they say have previously been frozen and can't be re-frozen.

Would it be very unsafe to eat?

if my fish can't be re-frozen (and i've got bloody loads of it) how long can i keep it in the fridge? I think only 2 days max?

Don't know about your salmon ILoveBanksy, can it kill you if you pretend you haven't read it?

I probably would eat it if it was just me but not for the dc's

When is the use by date on your fish?

bonnyb1 · 15/06/2009 16:00

do you know what i've frozen it, it's only me that will eat the fish and i've usually got a pretty strong constitution. If you don't see me on here again, maybe I was wrong.......! the coroners report will read 'death by fish'

Raw meat or fish that has been frozen cannot be frozen again until after it is cooked. If you bought previously frozen fish and froze it again, throw it away.

Chicken casseroles are better if completely defrosted first, but I have seen recommendations that say if you put it in the cold oven and leave it there while the oven is warming up, that is also absolutely fine.

bonnyb1 · 15/06/2009 16:14

damn i should of cooked the fish then froze it, now I'll have to throw it out because I'm scared!

How long could I leave a cooked chilled chicken cassreole in the fridge for do you think?

cooked chicken casserole in fridge for four days max.

You can cook it from frozen though, just like you can cook frozen ready meals from frozen. Just preheat the oven first and cook it for long enough for it tobe piping hot.

You should have cooked the fish lol orry I know that doesn't help. Bacteria on it will have multiplies when defrosted the first time, then lay dormant when you re-froze it, then they will all start multiplying again when it is defrosting for the second time, so chances of far more bacteria being injested if it is not then cooked for long enough to kill the bastards.
