If I do roast beef in the slow cooker do I add water?

I don't add water and it always seems fine. If you wanted to add liquid I might be more inclined to add a bit of stock or red wine.

No idea about timings though, sorry - would depend on size of the joint and on your slow cooker. Think I normally do it for about 10 hours but not sure how much the meat weighs.

Well it's quite a big joint (MIL bought it for us) but I am going to halve it and freeze the rest.

Next question, can I roast potatoes in there with it?

wouldn't advise it. In my experience, the beef gives off a lot of liquid so your potatoes wouldn't roast. Nice gravy though.
