Can you cook mince meat from frozen I want to do a bolognese but forgot to get it out.

I know it's a waste of a thread but I don't know who else to ask.

TIA

do you have a microwave with a defrost function?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 02/05/2009 13:17

Yes. If you're using the deep-frozen crap beef mince from eg Iceland, that comes in pellets, just use as you would fresh mince, but if you're using stuff you froze yourself (so it's probably in a block) you'll need to keep poking at it stirring and bashing it a bit or it'll stay one big block. Add extra water to help it defrost as you go, then reduce the fluid by simmering extra long.

I'm sure its OK to eat but I don't think it would taste as good - I agree with the microwave derfrost option if you have one, I use it for mince all the time.

I always defrost in a pan if I've forgotten to take it out in time. Keep turning it over and scrape it off as it cooks until it's thin enough to stab violently with the spoon. Good for getting out the rage.

Oh, thats absolutely fine. As the meat in mince is in such small pieces it defrosts quickly enough once you are stirring it in the saucepan. So not the same danger as with a large piece of meat which, if cooked from frozen, might not properly defrost in the middle.

Yes you can do this.

FabulousBakerGirl · 02/05/2009 14:58

Put the mince on a rack so the liquid drips aay from the food.
Thaw in short bursts only with standing time inbetween. If you microwave for too long you will start to cook the outsid.
Scrape off the mince as it thaws.

HTH.

Thanks all for the replies.

It's the fresh stuff forom Tesco and I froze it, I will defrost it in the microwave I think (short bursts . ) Not until it's fully defrosted as it will start to cook as FBG said I think i will half defrost in the micro then bash the life out of the rest in the pan.

Thanks again
