Fan ovens/conventional ovens - temperatures in recipes etc.

Why do recipes, packaging with cooking instructions etc still give temperatures and say "Please adjust for fan ovens"?

I might be showing my young naivety here, but I've never actually come across a non-fan assisted oven (except for the old one my mum had, but that was older than me and broke before I started cooking unassisted) - how many people still have conventional ovens? And meanwhile I find it difficult to adjust the temperature/cooking time as I always seem to get it wrong.

So why don't they put instructions for fan ovens and say "Please adjust for conventional old ovens"?

Same problem here. My oven is fan assisted, but in reverse, is the first fan assisted I've come across. I normally turn down by 10 degrees or reduce cooking by 10 minutes. I normally still burn everything. But I can't fry an egg so..............
