The ultimate Hot Cross Bun recipe - who has it?

I want to make HCBs tomorrow as I am living abroad and have not had HCBs at Easter for about 17 years.

Does anyone have a really great, foolproof recipe?

Great minds think alike I will be watching with anticipation. I hate the peel in shop bought ones so need a recipe to make my own so I can swap extra currants for peel!

I am off to google so will let you know of any good looking ones

we had a quick survey about this subject (ok a thread) about a month ago and the general concensus was that they are too much of a faff to bother making.
Hang on I will try to find the thread...

Camenere
But I can't buy them anywhere. I am in HCB-No-mans-land. Not a Tesco or Sainsbury to be seen.

What? Difficult? Noooo - dead easy especially if you use a bread maker to make the dough, and don't insist on pastry crosses -just make little incisions in a cross shape on the top, or use flour and water paste, which you just kind of draw with using a spoon.

Carmenere · 07/04/2009 20:56

ok well the thread is here

Carmenere · 07/04/2009 20:57

there are recipes on that thread, good luck and let us know how it goes

MmeLindt · 07/04/2009 21:01

Will try one (or a combination) of the recipes on that thread. I normally use a food processor to bake bread/rolls and find them not too much hassle.

Thanks.

I was watching someone in the bakery dept in Tesco putting the crosses on batches of buns. Fascinating. Then someone else took the batches and divided them up into 6's and poly-wrapped them. I could have watched for ages.

Maybe I should video my HCB making and put it on youtube

I was thinking of giving this recipe a go. Haven't tried yet though

StirlingTheStrong · 07/04/2009 22:57

Although this one is supposed to be easier!

have just tried Nigella Lawson hot cross bun recipe from "feast" and very disappointed. Was suspicious about them as dough was left in fridge overnight then supposed to rise this morning and it never seemed to. Has anyone else tried this recipe with success. Have more hot cross buns than I can shake a stick at atm but will prob try another recipe later just to see if they work

motheroftwoboys · 10/04/2009 11:27

And there wasn't any sugar in the recipe. Is that nod odd?

breadandroses · 10/04/2009 11:33

bread book by linda collister has dead easy delish ones. Mine are rising now
