What food for a girlie night in?

I am planning on asking some friends round for a book swap evening soon (everyone brings some good books they don't want anymore and swaps them round) and I feel I should be offering food.
I am a pretty good cook but want 'nice' snacky things we can pick at, but that can be prepared with toddlers running amok present (nothing too complex/time consuming)

I don't often have friends round since I grew out of 'let's order a chinese and split it' so am at a complete loss!

Slices of pepper/carrot/anything you can make a long chunk out of with seasoned mayo for dipping.

A warm ciabatta/baguette/other bread sliced with a small bowl of olive oil (with balsamic vinegar added into the oil if you fancy) for dipping.

Olives.

Water chestnuts wrapped in smoked bacon, cocktail stick thru the middle and 10 mins in the oven (yummy, you need to taste it to believe it).

Slices of warm baguette spread with Boursin cheese.

Halved baby tomatoes with a sprinkling of salt and Parmesan, ovenbake.

Slices of Aubergine, salted, dipped in egg then breadcrumbs then fried in olive oil.

Or if you're feeling flush, asparagus wrapped in parma ham and lightly fried.

Dunno if any of that is tempting for you? Oh I'm hungry now

14 bags of Kettle Chips and a tonne of cream/chive dip. That'd do me.

ok just read HG's post and now feel like total chav

ps HG i'm hungry now too!! sounds luverly!

HolyGuacamole · 07/04/2009 00:19

Are you kidding? I read 14 bags of kettle chip and thought, right - sorted, to hell with all this cooking palaver!

Love kettle chips but they are mega fattening, can't open a bag without finishing it

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 07/04/2009 00:21

Nachos, cover in salsa and cheese then melt under the grill.

Molesworth · 07/04/2009 00:22

what about a ginormous Nigella chilli with guacamole, sour cream, salsa and corn bread/nachos?

NormaJeanBaker · 07/04/2009 00:31

I've never grown out of being excited by the sight of cheese on a stick. You could do an adult twist on kids' party food - like goat cheese and sundried tomato on stick and vodka jelly.

JackBauerKilledTheEasterBunny · 07/04/2009 07:21

Mmm, kettle chips and vodka jelly

Thanks for ideas, might get a few baguettes and some dippy stuff/stuff to go on top.
although I know a lot of us are dieting....

You need what my dp called 'girly picky bits'!

Madmentalbint · 07/04/2009 07:40

A big plate of chips with grated cheese. Mmmmm.

I'm easily pleased!

I do love the sound of HolyGuacamole's ideas though - very classy.

Posh nachos:
1 big bag tortilla chips
425g skinless, boneless cooked chicken finely diced
225g mature Cheddar cheese, grated
3 tablespoons Jamaican jerk seasoning, divided
1 red pepper, seeded and diced
1/2 lime
2 tablespoons snipped fresh coriander
100ml soured cream

Preheat oven to 220C/fan 200C/Gas 7.
Arrange tortilla chips in a slightly overlapping layer on a baking tray.
Mix up the chicken in a bowl with cheese and 2 tablespoons jerk seasoning, then sprinkle over tortilla chips. Bake 5-7 minutes or until cheese is melted, remove from oven.
Meanwhile, dice red pepper and mix with the lime juice and remaining jerk seasoning, put on top of the chickeny nachos. Sprinkle with snipped coriander and blob sour cream over the top.

It is the best ever, even if it is a little bit faffy!

notamumyetbutoneday · 07/04/2009 09:07

I dont care its only 9am- i want some of those nachos NOW boogeek!

JackBauerKilledTheEasterBunny · 07/04/2009 14:42

Exactly seeker.
Am loving all of HolyG's list but it might be a bit posh, and expensive, considering I am asking everyone to bring a bottle of wine too!

Like the look fo that boogeek
