Oooh, I am so jealous Do you live near the sea

I would buy scallops (pan fry with chorizo)

And mussels (clean, cook in a pan with some white wine, shallots etc.

badbadday · 05/03/2009 08:00

hmm - mussels and scallops, both lovely

Depends how much money you have I guess! I love halibut but rarely buy it due to the cost

Favourite fish meals here include
thai fishcakes - use coley for this
tuna steaks
fish pie - anything can go in!
mussels in sauce with wine, chillies, lemongrass, corianer, yum

Coldtits · 05/03/2009 08:19

ohhhhhhhh

Buy langoustines

MrsMattie · 05/03/2009 08:20

Monkfish and huge prawns and make a Goan fish curry or a Thai Green fish curry. Mmmmmmm.

badbadday · 05/03/2009 08:31

I'm getting really hungry now - goan fish curry, lovely

Cies · 05/03/2009 08:34

See what they've got in. IMO the fish market is the one place where it's better to not take a shopping list. Have a look around, see what looks fresh, what has a good price, ask the sellers what they recommend today.

FWIW I prefer to do fish really simply - baked or pan fried with salt, garlic and lemon. A whole fish baked on a bed of garlicky potatoes is YUM!

LGoodLife · 05/03/2009 11:46

I got two plaice and a dressed crab. I also got some watercress - maybe crabcakes and a salad starter (my kids like to play grown-ups and have starters).
Stirling, no I'm a good 2 hours from the sea - there are 2 vans that go to the ports early then come to the market.
So, suggestions for the plaice?

And Mrs Mattie, how do you make your Goan Fish curry, and do dcs eat it?

I had plaice last week with a lovely sauce - the recipe was actually out of AK!

LGoodLife · 05/03/2009 13:51

Whats AK apart from an assault rifle?

Recipe here

1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped
40g butter
225g button mushrooms, finely chopped
2 tbsps lemon juice
2 tbsps fresh parsley, chopped
2 tbsps plain flour
300ml milk
1 plaice fillet

Fry the onion in half the butter until transparent. Add the mushrooms, lemon juice and parsley and cook for 2 mins. Add the flour and cook for 2 mins, stirring continuously. Add the milk gradually and cook, stirring continuously until the sauce is thick and smooth

Put the plaice fillet into a dish and pour over the sauce. Cook at 180 for about 15 mins

Hope you like it

LGoodLife · 05/03/2009 22:30

Thanks, had no mushrooms, live miles from shops so will keep for another time.

Offered the dressed crab as it was with the washed watercress and mayo and vinaigrette. Crab all went in 5 mins flat, none left for dh.
Baked the plaice whole under a butter paper, served with tatties and veg. Dh did get some.

Are you in leicestershire? I love the fish market in Leicester!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 09/03/2009 15:06

Yum - we had fresh plaice on Staurday, dusted with a bit of flour and then pan fried whole. Really lucky as do live by the sea and the local lobster fisherman also line fishes so we could get anything. Last year he had a massive run of Dover Sole. We go every Saturday see waht they have and DD has her pot of prawns.
