I need inspiration for red cabbage and brussell sprouts.

I got them in this weeks veg box. Other than boiling them and serving with main course, not really sure how to make them into anything. Doesn't help I'm not overly keen on either.

A friend of mine does a lovely salad with red cabbage: shred it finely, mix with finely sliced red onions and loads of lime juice (and seasoning, esp. plenty of salt) - very zingy.

Try roasting the brussels sprouts. Put them in a roasting tin and drizzle with a bit olive oil, salt and pepper. Give them a shake to lightly coat. Roast at about 200 C for about 40 minutes. Much nicer than boiling.

Brussels sprouts - clean then slice quite thinly (not exaggeratedly so though). Slice some carrots. Finely chop some ginger. Heat some oil in a wok/deep frying pan, chuck the lot in and stir fry until the brussels have gone bright green but are still crunchy. Toss with soy sauce and sesame oil. Serve.

This dish is always a hit in my house, even with devout sprout-haters.

A similar thing can be done with cabbage, but you also add Chinese sherry.

I love red cabbage in salad as per PW's suggestion, or in a coleslaw. But the best of all is cooking it slowly with apple and onion to serve with pork.

Nigella does something nice with brussels + pancetta + chestnuts + marsala (recipe probably online somewhere, or it's in Feast if you have that).

Or use the sprouts for bubble and squeak?

That sounds nice Brangelina, will give that a go.

I'm determined not to have a long list of dislikes with this veg scheme. Just need to find more interesting ways to cook things.

This is fab - make it every Christmas, but works well with roasts etc.

Really delicious.

Winter salad with the red cabbage, along with grated carrot.

You could stir-fry the cabbage & sprouts together, or on their own, with garlic & ginger.

cook red cabbage slowly in oven with onion, apple, garlic, red wine vinegar, cloves, sugar. This freezes very well and can be reheated.

I like sprouts with peeled chestnuts.

Cook sprouts, then fry with bacon.

Useful thread here - I really like the Nigella salad I posted on it.
