I have a large smoked gamon joint that has to be cooked in the next week, what can I do with it?

I bought it at christmas and it was only when I got it home I realised that it was smoked rather than unsmoked. Anyway for whatever reason it didn't get used and I just don't know what to do with it. It cost £10 so don't want to just throw it away. Please help.

I slice mine and use in sandwiches. Also chop and bung it into pasta bakes etc.

Roast it, and serve it with boiled potatoes, peas and parsley sauce. Leftovers cold in sandwiches/pasta bakes as MrsSeanBean suggests. This is what I did with the smoked gammon joint that a friend of mine gave us for Christmas, and it was yummy.

you can have it as sunday roast? but also good to cook (poach in cider, or coke a la nigella?) and then freeze in portions to do as mrssb suggests?

CatMandu · 15/01/2009 16:10

Great, do you think that Nigella's coke recipe will be ok if it's smoked then? I've heard about it and feel like the only woman who'se never made it.

i don't see why not - i can never taste a massive diff between unsmoked and smoked ham/bacon (tho i know you can eat the latter raw!). but the 'science' of cooking it will be the same i'm certain.

i don't think the ham in coke is mindblowing but it is nice and soft and tasty.

great stuff, thank you all. I'm going to do it at the weekend then, for a nice wintery lunch.

I chopped all my left over ham up and cubed it. Fried it for a little while to brown it a bit, then mixed it into cheese sauce and bunged it in the freezer, in portions big enough for 2, for a pasta dinner. I also put some in the freezer on its own, for emergency pizza topping.
