I thought I hated lentils... I have discovered that I completely made this up, so what can I do with lentils?

Was brave and tried some veggie chilli with lentils, and it was yummy! It had green lentils in, and they had a lovely flavour.

Since they're so cheap, what can I use them in? Things like bolognese type sauces?

Any ideas appreciated!

Yes! I used them as a substitue for meat:

Shepherds Pie
Bolognese
Stew
Chili

and also in soups

Lentils with Autumn Vegetables

1 tbsp oil
1 onion chopped
3 garlic cloves crushed
1 teasp mild chilli powder
1 teasp ground cumin
240g piece of peeled, deseeded and cubed butternut squash or pumpkin
1 yellow and 1 red pepper deseeded and chopped
1 aubergine cubed (small)
400g tin chopped tomatoes
600ml (1pt) vegetable stock
240g green lentils
2 largish carrots chopped (small)
Good squirt of tomato puree

Heat oil and gently cook onion, garlic chilli powder and cumin for 5 mins.

Add pumpkin/butternut squash, peppers and aubergine and season and cook over a low heat for 5 mins.

Add remaining ingredients, cover and cook for 30-40 minutes or until lentils and vegetables are tender and liquid is absorbed. (Moniter the liquid, add a tiny bit more if required)

Transfer to a serving dish. Serve with crusty bread or pasta.(Grated cheese on top is also nice )

There's a Jamie Oliver Sainsbury's recipe(chicken and lentils) which is very good too.

PinkPoinsettias · 05/01/2009 19:17

i chuck a good few in a casserole when i do one as the kids won't eat the meat but don't notcie the lentils as they practically dissolve into the sauce

Cook puy lentils in a saucepan with water, 2-3 whole cloves of garlic and a bay leaf. Fry loads of onions with cumin seeds - and chillis if you like - until they are very crispy. Cook basmati rice. Bung the lot together and top with yoghurt. It's delicious

Am so excited to have found a budget option that I actually like...

I add red lentils to a simple tomato sauce to serve with pasta. It's a favourite in our house with cheese on top.
Red lentil soup also lovely with nice bread/sandwiches for an easy filling meal.
Lentil roast very tasty too.

I do veg and lentils in a pasta sauce and blitz in food processor. Really good source of protein...
