I use Delia's usually although I tend to double the quantity of spuds she uses. I tend to use 2lb of potatoes - peel and slice thinly, soak in cold water to get rid of a bit of starch and dry out a bit on some tea towels (clean!). Butter a dish, layer the potatoes putting crushed garlic and salt and pepper between each layer. Mix 5floz of milk and 5floz of double cream together (again I use more!) and pour over. Dot the top with butter and bake at 150 degs c for 1.5 hours. Yum.

what do you serve this with? I used to make when younger, but can't think what it accompanied, ta

I always make it when we have people coming over as it can be made in advance then just bung it in the oven.
Lovely with lamb, beef or duck but last week I did a chicken dish and it was yum. Just don't serve it with anything that has a creamy sauce.

I follow the French recipe. (It's in English)
