does anyone know what recipe i use to mak the vanilla for either vanilla cakes or vanilla slices

vanilla comes from the vanilla pod, buy them whole or get good quality vanilla extract (not flavouring) from supermarket/shop.

Do you mean the vanilla squidgy bit? You'd normally use a vanilla-flavoured crème pâtissière; there's one recipe here and another here.

Vanilla essence has been nowhere near any vanilla, you need extract. I have just bought some from Lakeland for £5.50 and will never go back to the £1 or so bottle from the supermarkets.

NAB - I agree with the extract, I use the Madagascan Bourbon Vanilla Extract - think you can also buy it in Tesco.
