magimix 5200 or 4200xl or kitchen aid

Have decided not to splurge on ridiculous shoes in the sales this year and instead buy a much coveted food processor. Any recommendations ? Know magimix has fab rep but the new 5200 has a few bad reviews online so a bit wary. Has anyone got the 4200xl version or alternatively a kitchen aid ( I have a kitchenaid food mixer and it is not just a pretty face, its great, and the FP does get good online reviews.)

Magimix are rubbish - mine packed up and so did MILs. If you have handblender and mixer then processor is a waste of space IMO. Never replaced the broken one and have not missed it. I'd go for the shoes!

I have the 4200, not the XL, but the basic version and I heart it lots and lots. Use it every day. I keep it out on the top - its not pretty like the kitchen aid, but it works and has a great guarentee

I was just about to start a v similar thread. But to answer your question, I have the magimix 4200 and I love it, but I've used it mainly for chopping and blending - not baking.

Now for the hijack...

My Kenwood Chef (which was my mum's and is almost 40 years old) has finally given up the ghost. The only thing that the KC can do that the magimix can't is mix at different speeds - and the bowl is useful.

Is there any point in replacing it or can I do all baking-related things in the magimix?

Is there ever an occasion where a machine with a variable speed setting is an essential?

Uncanny - was just perusing Magimix. I really want one . Will watch thread with interest.

I use it for baking - The bowl isnt as big as the Kenwood Chef, but it managed my christmas cakes and puddings no bother

Oh glad to see this thread bumped. Thanks for advice. I want a processor really for large batch veg prep/ bread crumbs and pastry making , not for cake baking. Does anyone have the kitchen aid one?

Mikestand at the shoes advice - unfortunately don't think I can. Bought loads of those clear plastic boxes to store my shoes a while ago. Very bad idea. All on full display for DH to count now. Was better when I used to just shove them under bed out of sight.

Can't comment on the kitchen aid, but I have had my magimix for years and use it all the time....even for just chopping onions when I'm feeling really lazy

DS1 (11yo) has also started using forrecipes he has learned at scouts!

Will watch for kitchen aid feedback because I been thinking about one for cake mixing.

Mrs Muddle, I always assumed for good baking you were better with a mixer - the whisk etc would incoporate more air - whereas afaik a processor blends which is ok for some things, like all in one cakes and pastry, but not all baking. I know for scones and bread doughs etc I use a slow speed on my mixer. And what about things like cream which you don't want to overwhip? I have to say that I think my (lovely, shiny abeit a bit poncey) kitchenaid produces very high quality baking - I bake a lot and had a kenwood ( my DM's too) and afterwards a variety of hand mixers before but this is definitely the best.

That's what I'm not sure about - I have a dough attachment on my magimix and also a whipping-cream attachment, but nothing like the "K" attachment.

I think I'll see how I get on for 6 months with just the magimix. It's my birthday in June, so I may buy one then.

Is your kitchenaid the lovely red one?

No it's black - suprise pressie from DH a number of Christmas' ago so he decided on the safe option. Have to say the red is truely lust inducing, think I had the same reaction to the first red one I saw as all the men I know have had to red ferraris ( glazed eyes, racing heart, drool..)

If anyone's interested , for better or worse, I've opted for a kitchenaid FP. Had a good look at both and the bowl on the KA was much sturdier without any clicky bits for me to break. It seems more solid overall. Also had a larger feed funnel and citrus press - it was one or the other with the magimix model I looked at. Still waiting for delivery so I guess the proof of this pudding really will be in the eating.. Thanks for all your advice - even if I didn't take it!

Elliephant, are you happy with your kitchenaid?
Has anyone else tried both? I am also trying to decide between kitchenaid and magimix4200, magimix 4200 XL. Has anyone had a chance to try two or all three of these and can tell me what they preffered and what the differences are? Thanks!

i have to say im still using my mothers magimix wich is about 20+ years old and apart from replacing the fuse its fab i couldnt do without it i use it atleast 3x a week

We have a magimix 5100 (which evidently no longer exists ). My major gripe with it is that the bowls crack - we have had 3 bowls and (separately) 2 lids - but to be fair that is in 10+ years. I also managed to knacker the shaft (by trying to get it to do the job of a dough hook - it doesn't like that ) but that too can be (and has been) replaced, and the unit itself has been great and it does work hard for a living in our house.

In answer to an earlier post - the maximix is great for most things, and I have used/do use it for baking, but for large quantities, maximum 'lightness' and certainly anything using a dough hook it is not the same as having a Kenwood Chef or equivalent and I am campaigning hard for a kitchenaid big mixer on a stand.
