I cannot tell her ANYTHING
Bascially butchers nice thick lamb chops, about 5 days old bought fresh.
Took them out today and they smelt fishy, nasty
Rinsed them thinking could be the bag or watever.
Still minging
Mum declared me fussy and uselss and proceeeded to cook them, the whole house reeks of grossness
Yet she is tucking in.
Will she get sick?

She might? I'd have binned them, but you can't tell some people eh! you can laugh if she gets ill.

compo · 27/12/2008 17:14

yuk! Is she staying with you? I'd get the loo cleaner handy

blametheparents · 27/12/2008 17:15

I wouldn't eat them.
Hope your mum is ok, but then I guess you will get 'I told you so'

You can't win either way!

muggglewump · 27/12/2008 17:15

Quite likely!
I'm not one for following dates, I go on look, then smell. If they smelled bad then they probably are bad.
Who'd want to eat lamb that smelled like fish anyway?

MatNanPlusTINSEL · 27/12/2008 17:18

Very possibly.

Can't teach some people.

Guidelines for a 2-4'C fridge is 3-4 days, most fridges are 4+'C so less time.

Piffle · 27/12/2008 17:25

Fridge is 5!
Well time will tell

It sounds like they are crawling with Pseudomonas bacteria hence the fishy smell. These aren't harmful in themselves but produce some horrible by products which make the meat taste off.

However, there could be some nasty bugs in there which could make her ill.

Or she could get revulsion sickness where you eat something so gross you vomit it back up immediately.

Chances are she will take a bite and feel sick.

Piffle · 27/12/2008 17:34

Nope all eaten and declared scrummy
Well she does smoke a lot so has zero taste buds

OP posts:
merrykittymas · 27/12/2008 17:38

Yuck don't know how it could have tasted scrummy smelling rank.

I bet you are waiting for her to run to the loo in a few hours with a great big I told you so

Piffle · 27/12/2008 17:40

no doubt she'd blame the sprouts
well at least it would shut her up for 24 hrs...

Impossible to know. I eat all kinds of smelly things which DH vetoes and I know to be fine.

good luck

IotasCat · 27/12/2008 17:40

sounds like something my mother would do- waste not want not

Podrick · 27/12/2008 17:40

Meat theat smells bad is bad and is dangerous to eat.
Good call not to eat it yourself or feed it to your kids... your mum may or may not get away with it but she is bonkers.

Bumperlicious · 27/12/2008 17:42

Probably she won't get sick. if she does this often she probably has a pretty resistant stomach. I admit I'm fairly lax with dates, but would use smell as an indicator of being off!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 27/12/2008 17:52

You do realise you have to come back in 24 hours and report back on the state of your mother's bowels?

MadameCastafiore · 27/12/2008 17:54

Lamb has an odd smell about it I find anyway - all the lamb I cook no matter how fresh or where I get it from smells funny to me!

Piffle · 27/12/2008 18:03

We eat a fairbit of lamb too. This smelt grim
I will be sure to report back

I'm with bumper - I reckon she'll be OK as she probably has cast iron guts due to eating dodgy stuff on other occasions.

Piffle · 27/12/2008 18:31

Au contraire
She weighs 8 stone survives on toast with an inch of butter
Watercress, French bread, 3 sugars in her tea and puddings.
She rarely eats meat or a full meal.
She has what we call
Gran o rexia
She is steadily losing weight now and is wafer thin.
We had the same chops fresh on the day they were bought ( for her as she protests we cook too much curry, which we do ) new potatoes, long stemmed broccoli
And she said she could not eat a thing as was stuffed from lunch (finncrisp crackers x 2 with smoked salmon)
Then at 9 pm went to mcdonalds!!!!!
I could throttle her.

OP posts:
Podrick · 28/12/2008 11:44

Is she still OK?

Dreyfus · 28/12/2008 12:01

The thing is, she'll probably be fine. The only time I've ever had food poisoning or even a dodgy tummy, it came from something which sneaked up on me invisibly and undetectably and I could never work out what it had been, it hadn't declared itself with a pong and putrefaction! Icecream and rice etc can be even more dangerous than minging meat. After all curries were nvented to disguise the taste of somewhat-bad meat, as until refrigeration a lot of what was eaten would have been far less fresh than we are used to nowadays.

Hope she IS ok.
