Im going to cook this tomorrow most prob boil it. Do I have to soak it before hand to stop it being too salty?

im doing a gammon and am soaking it for the day before i cook it in evening, but am changing the water every two hours, im also finishing it in the oven rather than completely boiling it and find that that combined with a nice glaze does make the world of difference

Have only cooked a ham once before, but I did soak it for quite a long time, changed the water and then soaked it again.

If you bring it to the boil in water and then pour the water away and rinse the ham off and then put into the pan again with water/coke/cherry coke/ginger ale/stock (whatever you're going to cook it in) it takes most of the saltiness off. Or so Nigella claims.

Depends whether you want it to end up sweet, you could use honey, or mustard, or Nigella's coca cola recipe (has to be fat coke) - I don't have the recipe but if you google it you should find it.

I do mine in coke and then glaze with syrup, brown sugar and wholegrain mustard. Nigella recommends, treacle, brown sugar, mustard powder and cloves.

Glaze - whatever you like really.

Jam/marmalade makes a good base for a glaze.

Ginger marmalade, mustard, dark brown sugar and cloves was nice. Or cherry jam, paprika, red wine vinegar and cloves. (as Nigella).

I tried diet cherry coke for the cherry coke ham and it worked. Haven't tried the plain cola one but will next time I have an excuse.
