Is Bicarb of Soda the same as Baking Powder?

No. Baking powder is bicarb plus something else (cream of tartar I think).

no they are not the same according to wikipedia but can be substituted for each other in baking:

Sodium bicarbonate is primarily used in cooking (baking) where it reacts with other components to release carbon dioxide, that helps dough "rise". The acidic compounds that induce this reaction include phosphates, cream of tartar, lemon juice, yogurt, buttermilk, cocoa, vinegar, etc. Hence, sodium bicarbonate can be substituted for baking powder provided sufficient acid reagent is also added to the recipe.[3] Many forms of baking powder contain sodium bicarbonate combined with one or more acidic phosphates or cream of tartar.

Traditional baking powder was composed of a mixture of tartaric acid and bicarbonate of soda (baking soda), a quantity of flour or cornstarch usually being added to reduce the strength.[2]

LOL! reminds me of the time I was abroad and got cistitis. Went to shop to buy bi carb and bought 2 pots(yes TWO pots)of baking powder instead...it doesn't mix so well with water and is vile...
Not sure what's the extra in baking powder, but they are definitely not the same

Not the same.If you were using baking soda instead of baking powder you would have to add cream of tartar.

They are different.

Using one instead of the other made my son's 1st birthday cake explode when I took it out of the oven.
