What are your favourite "bring a dish" meals?

Going to a party tomorrow, and it's bring a dish. Am undecided, so thought I'd turn to the collective wisdom (of people staying in on a Friday night, all saying Party? Party?!)

Bumping this cos it's on my watched list cos I also want ideas! Sorry Habbibu have none of my own though!

Sweet or savoury?

Favourite sweet thing to take is trifle; savoury is a homemade caremelised onion tart.

Is there a theme or do you know what anyone else is taking? Hot or cold? How many people?

Habbibu · 12/12/2008 22:03

No theme, no numbers, it's all terribly random. I have a red cabbage to use up, so I'm thinking about the Vietmamese style chicken and red cabbage coleslaw-y salad in Nigella's Feast.

Cold prob best, as dd and I will have to drive about half an hour to get to the party. Like those two suggestions, janeite...

a whole trout

Habbibu · 12/12/2008 22:06

Ooh - nice, SEA, but I think we may be aiming for something a bit more robust - think village hall, bluegrass band playing, and dd aged 2 staying up Very Late

I like honey and mustard potatoes. Boil new potatoes, crush a bit and slug in olive oil, wholegrain mustard and honey all whisked together first. If you put the dressing on the potatoes while they're still warm it soaks in better. Always goes very quickly when I make it!

I'm going to a similar thing next week, think I'm going to make a big veggie quiche (with shop bought pastry obviously!)

Habbibu · 12/12/2008 22:18

Oooooohhh - Like the potatoes idea!

if you go to the good food website and put barley in their recipe finder there's a FAB barley salad thingy (think the 2nd recipe to appear) with butternut squash, olives, sundried tomatoes...it's truly delish and fantastic for such events.

I went to adult and kids thing last night and took along a macaroni cheese - very simple but big hit with adults and kids.

Habbibu · 14/12/2008 16:07

hmm - there was macaroni cheese there last night. Were you in Fife?

I do an artful antipasto. Easy to eat and always goes down well.

No Habbibu - Hong Kong!
