For health reasons I am attempting to go wheat free.
I have a bread maker which is one of the few well used items in my kitchen, and I used to love the smell of freshly baked bread.
At first I was optimistic. I bought one of the gluten free bread mixes and popped it in. You know that lovely aroma when you first open the bread maker, well this was the opposite of nice. Couldn't bear to even try it so it went straight in the bin.
Next attempt was flat rye bread. I used the bread maker to mix the dough. DH came in just as I was scraping it out and commented fairly accurately that it looked like poo ( We are potty training at the minute so fairly well acquainted). I think the recipe missed out a vital bit about rolling it out because I just spread it about on a baking tray and when it came out, it still looked like excrement but tasted not too bad.
Final straw today. Bought some buckwheat flour and followed recipe to make pancakes. Again smell was foul and obnoxious. Tried a little corner and taste was beyond foul. Have dumped entire bag of flour in bin.
So is there any point in further experiments with the brown rice & chickpea flour that I have bought, or am I just doomed to oatcakes for the rest of my life (or until menopause anyway as diet change due to endometriosis, now at least I have one good reason to wish for the menopause)?
