Have just made Nigella chutney and put in jars. Do I put lids on now or wait for it to cool first?

Nigella's recipes can be maddeningly unspecific...

I have not made Nigella chutney but I have made chutney and I cool before lidding.

HTH

Ooh no (sorry to disagree) - get the lid on while it is hot, then you get a vacuum seal once it has cooled.

SuperBunny · 23/11/2008 22:26

With jam, I put the lid on while it is hot. Prob doesn't help you though.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 23/11/2008 22:26

What jars are you using ?

(good point boo)

(I use Kilners)

boogeek · 23/11/2008 22:28

Boo's right . Need heat to create vacuum and keep sterile

Shortened and bolded

boogeek · 23/11/2008 22:31

Woohoo! Won't be able to sleep tonight now

funnypeculiar · 23/11/2008 22:32

Agree with boo {smile]
Oh, and bargainous kilners in Wilkinsons btw

gigglewitch · 23/11/2008 22:33

roffle at the idea of nigella chutney
isn't that long hair a bit of a problem when you are trying to shut the jar?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 23/11/2008 22:34

[anxious] about poisioning my family.

Ah well.

You learn loads on MN.

Ernestina · 23/11/2008 22:35

using jam jars - have decided to put lids on while hot - hopefully that was the right decision. Have burned my hands though.

Ha ha ha - yes I don't think Nigella will fit in my biggest pan, never mind a jam jar

Oooh for you your sore hands

at fitting Nigella's hair in

funnypeculiar · 23/11/2008 22:43

I'd be more worried about fitting her baps & pout in

Thanks everyone. When I came down this morning the jars had obviously sealed as you can't press down the middle of the tops any more, iyswim. Am feeling very domestic goddess like (without the long hair, pout and, er, generous baps)
