Has anyone ever made Nigella Lawson's banana muffins...?

from Domestic Goddess. Because I did and they were foul. She is normally pretty reliable and I feel betrayed. Is it her or is it me?

You, I make them often and they are fab.

SlubberOverTheYardArm · 14/11/2008 21:13

yes. dry imo

Doobydoo · 14/11/2008 21:13

Yes.They are YUM.

SoupDragon · 14/11/2008 21:16

General MN consensus in the past seems to have been that they're duff. Susan Reimer's muffin book is a MN favourite.

MrsHappy · 14/11/2008 21:16

Not you - when I made them they were horrific.

FiveDollarShake · 14/11/2008 21:23

I made them and they tasted awful and were all stuck to the cases.

lalalonglegs · 14/11/2008 21:28

Yes! Exactly! They were squat and lumpy and had a really bitter aftertaste - thank Christ I thought to try them after being a bit about the batter. I was intending to give them to my daughter's school for their cake stall. Doobydoo and CatMandu - do you have the UK version of the book? Consensus seems to be that Nigella got it badly wrong on the British print run...

I use the blueberry muffin recipe from Domestic goddess and just swop the blueberries for banana and choc chips. they come out fine.

SoupDragon · 14/11/2008 21:32

I looked on her website and there's no correction listed for the muffins.

SoupDragon · 14/11/2008 21:33

corrections

lalalonglegs · 14/11/2008 21:45

Good link SoupDragon. I've emailed them this thread

some of the corrections are fairly important ones! I think it was a MN thread that alerted me to the corrections page on the website. I had no idea there were errors in the books before then.

madamy · 15/11/2008 09:11

No wonder my flapjacks didn't stay together - there should have been an extra 100g syrup!! I thought 50g wan't very much, but trusted nigella!

Oh, the banana bread is fantastic.

UnquietDad · 15/11/2008 15:01

I have no contribution other than this.

SoupDragon · 15/11/2008 15:04

Well, thta;'s certianly added something to this discussion about Nigella's muffins.

I'm not sure quite what it's added mind you.

woodstock3 · 15/11/2008 21:31

ooh im glad this wasnt just me. i followed the muffin recipe and the batter seemed incredibly dry and floury so in desperation sloshed some water into the mix, this made them edible (tho they stuck to the side of the cases) but not exactly historic. have made her raspberry and lemon muffins they were fine.
AND i did the flapjacks and they were rubbish and collapsed. it's a revelation i tell you
has anyone got rachel allen's Bake book yet? is it any good?

StubbleOnChin · 15/11/2008 22:16

Is Rachel Allen a guru then? Inquisitive.

Cadbury · 15/11/2008 22:19

I found they stuck to the case too. They didn't rise much either.

Tinker · 15/11/2008 22:34

Not made them but I've eaten them and they were lovely.

FiveDollarShake · 16/11/2008 09:04

I followed Meglet's advice and made the banana muffins following the blueberry muffin receipe but adding bananas instead of blueberries and they tasted much better!
Ive noticed that the banana muffin receipe doesnt say to add eggs or milk like other muffin receipes do.....I think thats where its going wrong!

Blinglovin · 17/11/2008 12:10

I made them on the weekend - following MN instructions so no idea if I made original or corrected version - and they were delicious. Although I used wholemeal flour so I think I'll add a bit of extra honey next time.

44christmaspuddingsinarow · 17/11/2008 12:13

I can give you a really good banana loaf recipy - it always works and you can put all the dtuff in the food processor and it still works very well.

let me know if you want it and I will post it later from home.

Did see gary Roads had a recipy for banana muffins - looked good and easy but havn't tryed it - has anyone?

SoupDragon · 17/11/2008 12:14

The only muffin book you need is by Susan Reimer.
