Butter or spread?

I'm really confused as to which is best.

Butter which is a natural product but very high in fat or a spread such as olivio or flora which is low in fat but full of horrible ingredients and E numbers.

Discuss.

Yes..sorry!!!
Just have a bit of a thing about products that masquerade as others.
Still don't know that it's so difficut to remember to pull it out of the fridge a bit earlier.
if I want oil, I but oil,if I want bu.....

(What AM I doing, concerning myself with this stuff??!!)

Tinker · 15/03/2005 16:30

Don't put it in teh fridge in teh first place

Surfermum · 15/03/2005 17:47

I've got a butter dish with a sort of funnel in the lid. You can pour hot water in it to soften the butter in the tub. I got it in a charity shop but I think it's Lakeland.

Toothache · 15/03/2005 21:20

Tinker - Doesn't it go off really quickly if you don't refridgerate it?? We buy it in massive tubs that last us maybe 2 or 3 weeks. Can't see it lasting that time sitting on my kitchen unit with the Tumble Dryer on the go!

hoxtonchick · 15/03/2005 21:46

i never put the butter in the fridge (dp does sometimes & it really irritates me...). just stick it in the butter dish & keep it out. spreads perfectly then.

MunchedTooManyMarsLady · 15/03/2005 21:47

Butter every time (unless baking)

OffendedMumsnetter · 15/03/2005 21:49

But Hoxtonchick... how many days will it last out of the fridge???? We buy in bulk.

Tinker · 15/03/2005 22:00

Don't put it in teh fridge once I've started using it (keep unopened in fridge) One pack lasts a week? Doesn't go off if in a butter dish.

colditzmum · 15/03/2005 22:05

Oh boy, I'm gonna get shot here.....

I buy Vitalite. And all of us, ds included, eat it.

colditzmum · 15/03/2005 22:06

Although I actually prefer the taste of butter, but if I have it in the house I put it on everything.

Sorrel · 15/03/2005 22:09

butter. don't know what's in the spreads, but if you read the packet it sounds vile.Butter has a nicer taste and ok if you have a small ammount. olive oil for cooking though.

Furball · 15/03/2005 22:24

hoxtonchick - Which brand do you buy, as I've tried a few and they don't spread even at room temperature.

joash · 15/03/2005 23:21

Have to use butter because of nuts in spreads and marg's.

hoxtonchick · 16/03/2005 07:32

didn't meant to offend you toothache!

i'm not loyal to 1 particular brand furball. have sainsbury's own salted version at the moment, president in the fridge waiting. i guess it depends how cold your kitchen is. ours doesn't have heating, but the boiler is right next to it so it's quite toasty.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/03/2005 17:50

Looked at the ingredients in Spreadable Yeo Valley Butter today - butter, oil, water, salt. I'm ok with that.

RTKangaMummy · 16/03/2005 18:10

RTKangaMummy · 16/03/2005 18:11
