and seems to be in nearly all the recipes in my slow-cooker book! Is it really needed for the flavour, or is there an alternative i can use??
Just spent half an hour picking it out of my casserole liquid before putting in slow cooker, DH will divorce me if he finds any (and i wouldn't blame him!)
Anything else i could use, o wise ones???

chard? like pink celery, only cooks better.

PeaMcLean · 01/11/2008 22:01

I'm glad there's someone else out there who knows the truth about celery.

I just miss it out. Or use other oniony type things. Leek?

I just ignore it like Pea

SkreamingSkramble · 01/11/2008 22:02

Argh hate the stuff can taste it through the whole dish, I normaly substitute with leek.

muggglewump · 01/11/2008 22:04

I just leave it out and stick in more of something else, differs depending on what I'm making.
I also think it's devil's food.

EllieG · 01/11/2008 22:04

You are SO right, am glad someone out there is saying the same as me.

I just leave it out. Is vile, don't miss it.

TheArmadillo · 01/11/2008 22:05

I love celery.

It was one of my pregnancy cravings.

Not cooked though - no point if it's lost it's crunch.

Twinklemegan · 01/11/2008 22:08

I hate it raw. I like it braised with a cheese sauce wrapped in ham. And it's pretty essential in casserole-type dishes.

PinkPussyCat · 01/11/2008 22:16

What about fennel instead?

PinkPussyCat · 01/11/2008 22:17

Or is that still too celery-y?

snickersnack · 01/11/2008 22:19

I can't bear to touch it - I can smell it on my hands for ages afterwards. I never use it in casseroles. They taste just fine without it.

caspercat · 01/11/2008 22:34

Wow, an emotive issue
Think i'll go for the whole stalk in, then remove it - so simple, why didn't i think of it
Thanks guys x

It is the food of the devil, fact. Glad others are spreading the word!!!!

I was so glad when I read the other day that a certain chef (can't remember who!) doesnt add it to stock as it makes it bitter, insteads adds a splash of wine!

Tinker · 01/11/2008 22:48

Saw someone buying this yesterday and thought then that it is on my list of Foods I Never Buy

SmugColditz · 01/11/2008 22:50

I don't use it, it's gross. You can buy celery salt though, if you really need it, but I think cooked celery is disgusting.

raw celery is ok, but unless you chew it really well you get a nasty surprise after breakfast the next morning.
