Can you help a pregnant woman work out what she wants to eat? It's something chilli/salsaish like lime pickle

Can any fabulous MNers help me? I've been very limited lately in what I can stand to eat (because of pregnancy and sickness) - basically nothing green, or remotely like a vegetable, only crunchy red grapes fruitwise.

But I'm reading a book where one of the characters works at a chilli salsa bottling plant and starting to think mmmmm chilli, garlic, crunch yum yum.

Can anyone suggest a recipe (or even prebought sauce) that might be crunchy, chillied, salty and maybe even contain some of the nutrition I really do need to get back into my diet?

I'm kind of thinking something that tastes very like lime pickle, but maybe with a crunch to it? Something that I could eat more than a couple of spoonfuls.

well salsa?
Or lettuce and dressing made of lime juice, garlic and chilli?

plantsitter · 17/10/2008 15:41

A stir fry with garlic, chilli and ginger? Will try to find a recipe but I've made it and it can be crunchy and salty especially with some soy sauce in it.

Why don't you just thinly slice some cucumber and carrots and marinade them in some vinegar mixed with sugar and a little bit of finely chopped fresh chilli and garlic.

plantsitter · 17/10/2008 15:45

like here with crispy veg or something?

mrsgboring · 17/10/2008 16:03

These look very good thank you all. The lettuce is interesting me greatly (surprisingly) so shall try that.

Reason it's not just simply salsa is I've not been able to look at anything tomatoey but hoping to work my way back to it eventually (we have about 5 tomato based meals a week normally)

You can make very nice salsa with mango or pineapple plus all the chilli/garlic/whatever, if that sounds at all nice. I do mango salsa with chopped onion, cucumber, ginger, chilli, garlic and coriander.

during pregnancy i craved celery and lettuce!
and water

was a cheap date

Thanks Horton. I am very salsa-ignorant; only know tomato ones. Not quite up to mango yet, but it may come as I progress.

I love fanjitas when I'm pregnant......

SharpMolarBear · 17/10/2008 16:21

lol

PortAndDemon · 17/10/2008 16:32

guacamole? But finely diced rather than pureed so that you get the crunch.

yomellamoHelly · 17/10/2008 16:33

I was thinking fajitas too. Dead simple to make. Avoid the cream and too much cheese and they're quite healthy too I think.

Twelvelegs · 17/10/2008 16:43

Avoid the cream are you mad????? This is the time for cream!

mrsgboring · 17/10/2008 17:36

Mmm fajitas and guacamole, really good. Would probably need the cream though as can only eat high cal stuff at the moment. If I didn't feel so crap I would really enjoy it.

Tonight in the end, DH suggested Indian takeaway with liberal dressing of lime pickle. (or is it verboten to discuss takeaway in the recipe threads?) and that's what we've gone for as it's Friday and suspect DH wants the excuse....

Jamie Oliver come and take me away.

I am having them myself tonight, those delightful packets (shhh) with salsa, sour cream, guacamole, jalapenos and all washed down with half a bottle of gaviscon!!!

blueskyandsunshine · 17/10/2008 17:54

my idea is chicken and bacon pieces stir fried to crunchy with mango chutney

you can slice up sweet peppers (red and yellow) really really small and throw them in for crunchiness and nutrition without ennui

mrsgboring · 17/10/2008 18:11

Have just had takeaway and it was fabulous.

Have even eaten spinach (cooked to death though it may have been) in form of saag alloo - quite doable provided I had a massive spoonful of lime pickle with every bite - have warded off scurvy for quite a while with that one.

The relief at having eaten something real is just phenomenal, I don't even care about the heartburn etc. that will inevitably ensue.

Heartburn, a nice mug of hot milk (drink quite hot too) is better than gaviscon!!

Lime pickle was my craving during my last pregnancy - I ate it with a spoon straight from the fridge. I got through jars and jars of the stuff!
