I have a recipe for meat and potato pie..........
I make it with braising steak rather than minced steak.
500g braising steak diced
1kg potatoes in cubes
3 carrots sliced
1 large onion
3 beef oxo cubes
pastry
Brown the steak and onions in hot oil in a large stockpot / pan.
Cover the steak and onion with boiling water, crumble in 3 oxo cubes, bring up to boiling, turn down to simmer, cover and simmer for 2 - 2 1/2 hours, until the meat breaks up easily.
Add the potatoes and carrots, and more boiling water to cover all ingredients, simmer until the potatoes and carrots are cooked.
Now taste and season, if the gravy needs thickening add some gravy granules, sometimes the potatoes thicken the gravy sometimes not.
I tend to cook pastry "lids" seperately, then place them on top of the bowls of meat and potatoes, but you can transfer the cooked mixture to a casserole dish, place the pastry on the top and cook until the pastry is golden.
It is delish and is the law that everyone in Lancashire can cook it by the time they leave home. I now live "down south", and my southern husband loves it and has been shown how to make it, as has my 5 year old DD.
Hope you like it!
Should be served with red cabbage.
