Take one fairy...

only joking.

Here's my mums recipe (from pre-1955) - it's old hence ye olde weight and measures:

4oz sr flour
2oz sugar
2oz marg
1 egg beaten with 2 tablespoons of milk
few drops of vanilla or lemon essence

Oven: HOT (425-450)
Cooking time: 15 mins
Makes 12 cakes

Beat fat and sugar to a cream
add in flour and liquid alternatively, a little at a time until all smooth. Half fill the cake cased and pop into a pre-heated over.

Or try this one which also works for victoria sponge.

Weigh two eggs (in the shell)
Weigh out equal weights of butter (or marge if you must), sugar, sr flour.
Cream butter and sugar.
Beat eggs and add them.
Fold in flour
Add tablespoon of milk or lemon juice
Put in 12 cake cases and
Bake 15 min at 175 deg C.
