Apple glut - have you got one, and what are you doing with them?

It's apple crumble every night here - I'm putting on a winter coat (of fat).

What else can I do with all these desert apples?

I grate half an apple into my oats every morning

dd2 snarfs two a day

juice them with carrots?

We were given bags and boxes of windfalls 2 years ago and we've just finished them. I cored and chopped them and then froze them.

We have had 2 years of:

Apple snow - utterly yum
Apple meringue
Crumble
Pie
Grated into salad
Sliced into cheese sandwiches

I might stew and freeze a load...

Apple JUICE gives me tummy ache

Cider ?
Stew some and freeze them.
Chop into rings and dry them.

how do you DRY them?

Cider makes me GAGGGGGGGGGG

cook with pork
put one in vegetable soup or in curry (I know it sounds a bit weird but it works for me)
apple scones very lovely
apple cake
flapjacks
and my dd and dh eat about 4 a day
we still have a serious glut, seven trees, we are drowning in apples.

I give them away too, last year we had lovely plum and apple jelly, but our plums were scarce this year, so maybe have to try elderberry which sounds lovely.

dh talks about making cider but it is just talk I think.

I love apple in porridge too.

my mum made a pie last week that had cooking apples as a filling, with dessert apples sliced on top, the dessert apples were so lovely she had shaken them in lemon juice and a wee bit of sugar... we are going to try storing some but will we be able to mouse proof the storage?

I had my glut a while ago now, but have neighbours glut coming our way and other mates too.

Crab apple jelly is what mate is making.
I made pies, crumble and easy stuffed and baked apples for dc puds.
I might stew the neighbours, with cinamon or ginger.

I slice them up Morningpaper and dry them slowly on a baking tray in the bottom of the Rayburn.

My apples trees seem all buggered. they are very old and I have not found someone who knows to prune em. Fruit has disappeared or rotten. I have no bloody idea. I am an apple novice.

We have only been here a few months though.

Next year I will have a plan.

I have also been doing the Nigella Express things: sheet of puff pastry, roll into square, cut 1cm border to puff up, then line with symmatrical sliced apples, drizzle in sugar and butter - bake for 20 mins

Wilfy shame to hear your apples aren't up to scratch. I thought ours were horrible until I realised they were just unripe

in my first year I ate bags of very SOUR apples

I have a recipe for apple and rosemary (or chilli) jelly that is scrumpt with ham or cheese, used as a glaze or stirred into gravy. I have 4 apple trees, 2 cookers, 1 eater and a russett.

wilfsell - we are new to apples too, ours are mixed some old some young, last year we had a lot less, I have heard you have to thin them quite a lot to get a good crop, so if they were not thinned last year then that might have effected what they produced this year?

Apple Chutney is FAB, I made about 12lbs last year. Also make apple jelly and apple curd. Apple sauce to freeze. We don't eat a lot of puddings but I love Eve's pudding and apple crumble, and both freeze ok.

come march you will be delighted to have apple crumble

also make LOADS of apple sauce and freeze, and make sure you have roast pork often. also peps up sausage and mash no end

give a bag to every person who walks through the door

put a box outside your gate saying "help yourself"

we made applesauce and froze it - can be used in baking, too, in place of oil.

also chopping them up and freezing them as they come in.
